Closing
After that, we’ll close with a word or phrase we’re taking with us.
IFS Coaching vs Therapy
Melissa Sandfort, an experienced IFS certified practitioner since 2010, introduces the concept of IFS and distinguishes between IFS coaching and IFS therapy. She explores how both practices differ, primarily in their approach to conceptualizing the Self and parts within the system.
Orchestra Metaphor
Melissa uses the metaphor of an orchestra to explain the internal system. In this metaphor, the Self is likened to a conductor and the various emotional and psychological parts are the musicians. She discusses how, in many cases, individuals are not aware of the conductor's presence, leading to chaos--similar to an orchestra playing without a conductor.
Role of the Conductor in Therapy
In therapy, the goal is to introduce and establish the self as the conductor to bring harmony and order to the inner parts. This process involves negotiating with parts that have taken on extreme roles (like a musician playing too loudly all the time), helping them to trust the conductor and take on more balanced roles.
Differentiation Between Parts and Self
A significant portion of the video addresses how individuals can begin to recognize and differentiate between their parts and their overarching Self. This recognition is crucial in moving parts from dysfunctional to functional roles within the internal system.
Development of Self-led Parts
Melissa discusses the potential in IFS coaching to not only manage but optimize one’s inner world by developing Self-led parts. These are parts that can perform daily tasks and functions with a high degree of autonomy and effectiveness, such as managing schedules or making decisions.
Empowering Self-led Parts
The concept of empowering Self-led parts to take on more leadership within the system is explored. Melissa presents a scenario involving "Green," a manager part of her system, illustrating how she coaches this part to transform its approach from commanding to coaching, thereby fostering a more supportive internal environment.
Servant Leadership Model
She introduces a servant leadership model within IFS coaching, where the Self acts not just as a leader but as a facilitator that empowers parts to develop their own Self-energy, enhancing the overall functionality and harmony of the system.
Practical Application and Examples
Throughout the video, Melissa provides personal anecdotes and practical examples of how she has applied these IFS principles in her own life and in her practice, demonstrating the profound impact of recognizing and nurturing the relationship between the Self and its parts.
Conclusion
The video concludes with Melissa advocating for a deeper exploration of IFS for individuals interested in personal growth and optimal functioning. She emphasizes the adaptability and transformative potential of IFS!
This video serves as both an introduction and a deep dive into the practical applications of IFS, offering insights that are valuable for both newcomers and those who have IFS experience!
